Students are introduced to the ways in which cultures meet and interact in tourism settings. Consideration is given to intercultural communications, cross-cultural issues, and challenges in meeting the needs of both the “host” community and the “guest” from a tourism perspective. Students explore the range and diversity of cultural narratives and place-based approaches for developing cultural tourism experiences. Key concepts and topics include privilege and power, global citizenship, sustainability, development strategies, equity, authenticity, commodification and representation of cultural landscapes.
