The Thompson Rivers University First-Year Science Cohort Program was developed and launched in 2023 with a goal to enhance the experience of students beginning their undergraduate education. Students were introduced to 8 different personal and professional development topics in monthly meetings from September to April. Suggested activities and special seminars supplemented students’ exploration of these themes.

program introduces and emphasizes the following ideas and encourages
participants to investigate them further through their selected activities and
sessions:
- Personal and Professional Development: scheduling, organization, time-management, goal setting, expectations, learning styles, reflection, accountability, motivation, wellness, recovery, identity, introductions, confidence
- Career Planning: education, special skills, service, related professional experience, research experience, mentorship and networking, collecting evidence and portfolio building
- Social Connection: Exploring the campus, attending workshops, field-trips, and monthly meetings
