Public institutions are at the heart of any community and often the source of the newsworthy stories. Knowing how local governments function and where to find information is a critical skill for journalists so they help keep elected officials accountable to the people they serve. Students will learn the roles and responsibilities of local governments and public boards. They will develop journalism techniques including interviewing sources, researching archived reports, attending council meetings and tips on covering a defined municipal beat. Throughout the term, students will develop story pitches, use social media to communicate their story and produce one major reporting project.
