ENGL 2020 Writing and Critical Thinking: Research

 Calendar description:

Students continue to explore the theory and practice of academic reading and writing through a variety of topics or issues. Students perform close critical readings of scholarly texts to identify, analyze, and communicate the stylistic strategies and characteristics of academic sources. While investigating a topic, students use various research methods to assess, organize, and synthesize those scholarly sources in their own writing. They gain extensive practice in research writing, and apply the theories and practices of academic writing, with a focus on the research genres, including critical summaries, research proposals and research papers, and reinforced attention on documentation and grammatically-correct style. Students also practice communication strategies for professional discourse through group feedback on writing.  

 Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:

 

  1. Perform close critical readings, demonstrating fluent comprehension of scholarly texts on a variety of subjects.
  2. Identify, analyze, and articulate key features of academic texts, stylistic strategies, and characteristics of academic sources.
  3. Investigate a topic, using various research methods to assess, organize and synthesize scholarly sources.
  4. Participate in professional discourse, applying the theories and practices of academic writing.
  5. Compose analytical essays, using academic sources, scholarly argument, and academic citations.
  6. Critically engage in the processes of giving and receiving informed feedback on academic writing.
  7. Write with proficiency at a university-level, grammatical style.
